Open Question: Which colour would be best to respray my car? Dark grey or dark red?

I have a 1979 Mini which I am in the middle of restoring. I have two colours in mind, either dark metallic grey or dark metallic red. Im just wondering whether the dark red will fade as I have seen many VW golf's etc whose red paint work have faded and look awful. more

Open Question: I'm looking to buy a car?

I'm looking to buy a cheap reliable car, i live in London UK so in that area, what kind of car can i find for up to or around between £500-£1,000, no more, willing to go less as long as car has at least 6 months tax & MOT and no extra issues to deal with, i'm a female and don't have time or patience for mechanics, just need to get in and drive, that's it. Can you point me in the right direction, i've been checkin out auto trader, fairly good, just wondered if anyone on YA was selling a car perhaps, or knows anybody who is in that price range. Type of cars: polo, clio, punto, 206, that type of car, no (metro, mini, micra) hate them. Thanks guysi've been on ebay too think its crap, went to cargiant, can't get finance (poor credit) so have to opt for a 2nd hand car, defo cannot afford a golf for a grand, plus insurance would be stupid. more

Voting Question: Colour bars in final cut pro?

1.) When I put them on before transferring to mini DV tape. Do I leave a gap in between them and the video? Or just let the video start straight after the colour bars have finished? I leave the colour bars on for 30 seconds. 2.) Is this what 100% colour bars look like in PAL? - http://www.mivs.com/products/videoproducts/tsg/images/ff-bars100-75-0-640.gif 3.) One more thing, I have footage of approx 5 seconds long max of a turret blowing up a car in it. Do you think that is ok to put in? The track is a political rap track. There is no footage of any killing in it though. If you want to see a link of the video let me know so I can send it to you. (I'm keeping it private at the moment) 4.) Is there anything else I need to include before exporting to tape? more

Resolved Question: First time driver insurance?

I am looking to start driving in September when I turn 17, and I absolutely adore the cars 'Mini One' however im told that the insurance will be horrendous. Does any one have any idea what a reasonable full comprehensive cover would be for a first time driver. Or any other good looking cars that would be cheaper to insure? I am also quite fond of KA convertibles, and VW beetles. I'm setting my sights high I know lol :) more

Resolved Question: Mini Cooper or a New Fiesta?

I am currently changing my car and have narrowed the search down to either a mini or a new fiesta. My heart says mini but my head says fiesta given the practicalities of boot space etc. My only reservation with the fiesta is that I would prefer the sports version but I dint want to look like a boy racer wannabe etc Anyway I would just like to gage Ggneral opinion of course I will make my own decision but PLEASE NO negative comment like both cars are rubbish - I cant afford a porsche. Oh and both the cars will be the 1.6 diesel........all our cars are diesel for the convenience of having our own tank at home! more

Resolved Question: When there are four cars at a mini roundabout, who gets priority? (UK)?

Just wondering because this situation nearly always results in an accident.Sandro M, I may have exaggerated about the accident part. However whenever I'm brave enough to be the first to move off, the car on my left (who should be giving way to me) shoots across infront of me, forcing me to slam the brakes on or take evasive action. more

Resolved Question: A one-off mini moke, what should I ask for it ?

Hi, It is part Canadian in structure, with a reclaimed and re-furbished Brit mini engine and transmission. Stripped down completely, and professionally re-sprayed in red. Alloy wheels, new instrumentation and wiring, new soft top, Original badges, sports seats, sat-nav, CD player. It all sounds a bit fancy, I know, and over about three years or so of restoration, it perhaps got a bit out of hand. I see "standard" ones advertised, so I have a guide price, but that darn item has to be worth a lot more. Local car dealers have said put it in a specialist magazine. But what do I ask for it ? It owes me about £6000 in costs, so would I get double that, or am I being optimistic ? Any notions ? Bob more

Resolved Question: What to buy my boyfriend for his birthday....?

Well... I've been with my boyfriend 6 months and I want to buy him something special for his birthday. He likes old classic cars as he has a classic mini cooper,(and other fast cars) bikes, rugby, sexy underwear. I don't want the usual after shave etc. I have no idea about clothes for him. I'm rubbish with mens clothes. For his last birthday I bought him an expensive chain I hadn't been with him long then. But for this birthday I really want something special because my birthday is 5 days after and it really annoys me coz he always out does me on the presents and I feel a bit guilty then. I have thought about a trip to silverstone racing place. But its a bit far and it would probably cost more in petrol. I want something thoughtful that would go with his hobbies :) PLEASE HELP! more

Resolved Question: What car should I buy?!?

I have a shortlist of a 2005 - 2008 Beetle convertible 1.6, a 2008 - 2009 'Mini 1.4 One' or a 2008 / 2009 'Fiat 500 lounge'.... I love the look of the fiat and it is safe with 5 stars from crash tests but dad says its likely to be unreliable. The Mini is cheap to run with the servicing pack it comes with and they drive well, but they are pretty much everywhere now-a-days. The beetle is cute also and has wind in the hair fun that would be cool as a first car and I have always liked them but is most expensive to run. I have asked my friends and so far its almost 50/50 for the Mini and the Fiat :S Thanks for your help more

Resolved Question: How easy is it to trade in a car?

I am going to try & trade my car in tomorrow - I have a mini cooper which I would like to trade in for a VW Polo. How easy is the process? I have an outstanding loan for the car which is about 7k - how would it work out? Would the garage pay my loan company & then I start afresh with a new company for the outstanding amount? I have no idea, please help! more

Voting Question: What's the best thing to do?

I bought a Mini Cooper 02 reg 8 months ago, since I've had it the power steering pump has gone which cost me £400, then the windscreen wiper motor went which cost me another £60, now my gearbox needs to be either rebuilt or replaced as it is making a really loud purring noise which stops when the clutch is down (this has been confirmed by a mechanic) which is going to cost me £1000! I dont want to spend any more money on this car for it to go wrong again! What would you do personally? I thought about trading it in but is it going to be obvious to the dealer that theres a problem if they dont drive it? How likely is it that they wont drive it? Please help as I dont know what to do, thanks. Also how dangerous is it to keep driving it as I have no other means of transport to get to work! more

Resolved Question: 2004 Mini Cooper S EXHAUST HELP!!!!!?

Ive had some bother with my exhaust on my mini. Ive had to replace the manifold, cat, and back system. As everyone is suffering from the credit crunch i had opted to buy the parts seperately online and get my mechanic to fit it, well the manifold was done by a mechanic and the cat back was done by powerflow, a stainless steel exhaust company. all parts fitted and car works fine, perhaps with a few extra HP too, however I now have a much bigger noise coming from the exhaust which I hate.. Can I buy some sort of muffler to correct the problem? It has been worth doing this method as i've saved £1300 on parts and labour. Also can you suggest anyone that would do this? eg, a tyre/exhaust specialist garage? as i have one near to my home.. thanks for any help I recieve more

Voting Question: automatic car ?????

is it the way forward in the uk im about to turn 17 and really want 1 but being adviesed not to because most cars are manual and if i was to go to rent a mini bus then i would need a manual licence more

Voting Question: What would you do if you won 110 million on tonights euromillions?

First thing i would do is give up uni and work (too stressfull lol) and I'd volunteer to work at the NSPCC cos i've always wanted to work there but have never been financially secure enough to work for nothing. I'd also donate a sizeable amount to the NSPCC, Cancer Research UK and the RSPCA for all the great work they do. Next, i'd book me and my fiance on a world cruise and see all the places i've always wanted to go to, especially australia, italy, south of france, crete, new york etc, as i've always wanted to travel. I'd buy a lovely little cottage in the country (not huge though, maybe 4/5 bedrooms) and i'd pay an interior designer to come in and make it look all lovely and homely. I'd pay to do a crash course in driving so i could pass my driving test, and then i'd buy a mini cooper (no big cars for me, i'm not materialistic and i'd be scared of smashing it up!) but i would by my fiance an aston martin cos he loves his cars!! And then all i'd want to do is get married to my fiance (still in the same beautiful church i've wanted to marry in for years) I'd just hire a wedding planner to do all the stressfull bits, and we'd honeymoon in the maldives and hawii, and then I'd have our first child, as the main thing i want to do in life is be a mummy, but i've always said i'd never get pregnant until i had enough money to give them a decent start in life!! And that would be all i'd want, so then i'd give the rest away to my family =) What would you do??? xxx more

Voting Question: Air Cadets - Sponsored Events for a Minibus?

Recently I have noticed that it is now getting a bit pathetic having about 6 different cars all taking cadets to one place. So now we want to buy a mini bus to stop this from happening. The only way we can afford a minibus is to do sponsored events to raise money. Please can you post some good ideas the whole squadron can get up to to try and raise enough money. So far we have a 30 Mile bike ride and a Vulcan Plane Pull. Any more?I go to 1330 (Warrington) Squadron, if you do have a mini bus at the sqn, how did you afford to buy one and how did you get the money etc? more

Resolved Question: can i make a complaint against the police?

i will explain what has happened. in december last year i was going to work in my van.im a self employed plumber in england.i was travelling down the road, and in front a cyclist justswung out into the middle of the road.as the road was wet ,even though i wasnt going very fast,i decided in fear for the cyclist,to overtake him than slam all on and risk a collision.i did this, and went about 20 yards where traffic stopped,so i didas well.as i was sat there theman on the bike freewheeled to my van, kicked the back of the van, came to the drivers window and punche the window, making the van shake.he then gave me a load of abuse and verbals.he then went on the other side of the road, and set off,all the time giving abusive gestures etc.thinking he could have damaged my van,i foolishly went after him,all the time safely, but on the wrong side of the road for the length of 6 cars.all the time the cyclist was looking back at times and verbally abusive etc.i have a witness to all this.we went over a mini round about and at this point the cyclist, still looking back fell from his bike on to the grass, this happened at about 5 miles per hour.i persued him to get his details, thinking the van was damaged.he got up,i honestly thought hed just hit a curb or a bump.he looked ok,but really agressive, and approached the van,so i turned the van round and went,as i set off i motioned towards him, then turned,it was a drive i was in and could do no other menouver.he had 3 witnesses who said they saw this 2nd part.i got arrested, and this dragged on and through the courts until this week, when my barrister couldnt get the cps to lower the charge and advised me to plead guilty to dangerous driving.im now looking at at least a 1yr ban, community service,a fine.my business will probably go under,i cannot pay my mortgage, will lose m home, its caused incredible stress,my poor wife and 3 children have been through hell, and god knows what else is to come.the thing iv never got over is why the cyclist has never been charged, and i honestly feel its been like a witch hunt.can i make a complaint against the police,or cps.thankyou in advance. more

Voting Question: what car should we get, needs to be manly and girly?

I'm looking to buy a second hand car for myself and when my boyfriend passes his test next month he'll be driving it too. He wants a ford cougar or a fiesta zetec. I 'd love a mini cooper but i can't aforrd one and know i won't be able to get one for my budget! I'd like a sporty car that is girly but not too girly (if there is such a thing!), but as my boyf will be driving it it can't be too girly, or too high an engine (as he's a new driver so insurance would be a lot) which rules out sporty ones. Any advice/help would be greatly appreicated! I have around £3k to spend. Ka's are out of the question as I can't stand them!! more

Resolved Question: I stopped walking now my thighs are larger, will a stepper help?

Hi there, Thanks for reading this.. Ive looked all over the internet and can't seem to find any specific answers, so I thought I would ask here and cross my fingers... :) I moved like four months ago, and I seem to have gained a lot of weight since. I noticed this about two months ago, and have put a lot of effort into examining and modifying all the general ''new" food choices in this new situation, that are different and have a plan to make things work. Basically I used to live alone, cooked my own meals etc.. I'm vegetarian and lived near a proper market so it was always very fresh and healthy, now I live with family (who are mostly not vegetarian) and so I end up just snacking on carbs and things, and having half arsed meals which are not always so balanced as we eat together. Anyways, I'm working towards cooking solo whilst not offending everyone and basically keeping to a diet that works for me. My main problem right now is my thighs, (yes I have gained weight, which is slowly dropping off due to taken more control of the food situation) but the other major issue is now at my new home, I don't really exercise, my physical fitness level is at zero. When I lived alone I did not technically work out, but I walked to work and back every day, I walked to the shops, to socialise.. I walked everywhere really, and rarely got into a car. Now, well, I have to take the bus to work and you could just say I sit around and sit some more. My legs which were once lean, slim, toned without seeming 'worked out or muscley' (I'm naturally slender I have no boobs so this worked for me) are suddenly well, HUGE. Whilst I can still wear all my tops as comfortably as ever, my jeans and trousers are tight, hard to button and I feel very unattractive and unlike myself... I can't afford to get a whole new wardrobe you know? Everywhere is more or less as it was, but lower than my hipbone theres this new curvy thigh area which I simply have never seen before, even when I was pregnant and gained weight I never gained in just one area like this.. The scale now only says about 6 pounds difference, yet my thighs are pushing at my jeans seams, it's all very uncomfortable. I have now purchased a mini side stepper thing from argos.. Cheap and I can put it in my bathroom. I want to start a program of maybe 30 minutes a day on it, to make up for the lack of walks etc in my previous life which it seems was the only thing that kept me in my comfortable 'normal'. I don't want to make too much of a fuss, as this whole move has already stressed me out a lot, but I just need advice... Will the stepper be enough to mimic the low impact exercise that came up to about 45mins daily very brisk walks? Which it seems is what kept me lean and slim? Or will this encourage my new thighs to build muscle or something scary like that... ? Thanks in advance. more

Resolved Question: Where and When Can I Buy The Electric Mini?

I am so sick of petrol prices going up unecessarily, just because of the greedy oil companies, greedy govenment fuel-tax, greedy speculators, geedy wholsalers and greedy Opec countries all making a killing while the rest of us suffer with little or no income, I think it would be great to stick two fingers up to these greedy b*****ds by owning an electric car. (I am personally getting further into debt each week and most of my outgoing is petrol) If we all did this, they would have no-one to blame but themselves for being so greedy. They would have lost their livelihood, their entire industry, because of their own greed. more

Resolved Question: Consternation wih my little jet engine. What to do ?

Hi Folks, You may recall my question some time ago concerning fitting a mini jet engine to my mountain bike. I went ahead with the project, and it works a treat, much to the amusement of others, and a cause of alarm to myself. However, although I have it turned off in town, as it kicks out a lot of heat out the back, A local police patrol car stopped me on a country lane, a I was doing an alarming 50mph. I guess he was just interested in the arrangement, but asked me for the usual paperwork. "Haven't got any, as it is not a requirement in terms of insurance, licence, MOT, tax etc" It is not a wheel-driven vehicle. He stood in consternation, and radioed his station for advice. They didn't know either. He took the middle ground on this, by asking my to accompany him to the station, so someone could make some determination on this. I declined, as far I have have read and understood, it is perfectly legal. Thing is, the police are unclear on this, and I don't want to keep being stopped. As I say, I only crank the thing into life in rural areas, as I wouldn't risk having someone walking behind it in town. Any notions as to legality etc ? Bob more

Resolved Question: The ultimate test before marriage?

I was a very happy person. My wonderful girlfriend and I had been dating for over a year, and so we decided to get married. There was only one little thing bothering me - her beautiful younger sister. My prospective sister-in-law was twenty-two, wore very tight mini-skirts, and generally was braless. She would regularly bend down when she was near me, and I always got more than a pleasant view of her. It had to be deliberate. She never did it when she was near anyone else. One day the "little" sister called and asked me to come over to check the wedding invitations. She was alone when I arrived, and she whispered to me that she had feelings and desires for me that she couldn't overcome. She told me that she wanted to make love to me just once before I got married and committed my life to her sister. Well, I was in total shock, and couldn't say a word. She said, "I'm going upstairs to my bedroom, and if you want one last wild fling, just come up and get me." I was stunned and frozen in shock as I watched her go up the stairs. When she reached the top she pulled off her panties and threw them down the stairs at me. I stood there for a moment, then turned and made a beeline straight to the front door. I opened the door, and headed straight towards my car. Lo and behold, my entire future family was standing outside, all clapping! With tears in his eyes, my father-in-law hugged me and said, "We are very happy that you have passed our little test. We couldn't ask for a better man for our daughter. Welcome to the family!" And the moral of this story is: Always keep your condoms in your car. more

Resolved Question: Classic mini fuel filter?

I have fitted an in line fuel filter between the fuel pump and single SU carb on my 1980 mini 1000. I replaced some of the metal fuel line with proper rubber fuel hose. There are no kinks. I started the car today and noticed (eventually) that fuel was being expelled from the float chamber via some sort of overflow pipe which empties onto the front subframe, just behind the grill. Is it possible that i could have inadvertently increased the pressure of the fuel passing between the pump and float chamber by using the 6mm rubber fuel hose? Any advice would be appreciated Thanks Andy more

Resolved Question: Problems with current MINI?

Anyone else had problems with current MINI Cooper? I rejected the first one I got (2007) and have just got rid of its replacement after endless problems. Worst car I've ever had!Rejected car broke down only two times I drove it. Dealer not interested - made no attempt to repair the first time, simply re-set engine warning light. Dreadful experience with dealer all round. Replacement (from different dealer)needed new gearbox at less that 1000 miles, off-side front foglamp unit collapsed, bonnet release cable broke making it impossible to open bonnet, windscreen washer pump failed and system still didn't work properly after replacement fitted, nearside wheelarch liner kept popping out, recall for modifications to gearbox, which remained stiff and difficult to use, faulty front tyre valve, whistling noise at 60+ MPH, rattle from dashboard, CD player sometimes didn't work properly, "automatic" lights were simply on all the time, automatic wipers didn't work properly, display indicating hatch open when it wasn't, long delay in any adjustments to heating/ventilation taking effect, remote locking/unlocking reluctant to work at times! more

Voting Question: Random lights unexpectedly appeared on my mini's dashboard?!?

im recently on the recieving end of my mini cooper s' power steering pump failing on me, so ive just ordered the replacement part for that, since then i have no choice than to use my car in the time being while i wait for the part to arrive, i was driving home tonight and while on the motorway, 3 lights randomly appeared on my dashboard. 1 was the ABS, 2nd was the flat tyre alert and the 3rd was the ASC (anti-skid control) light. All lights were yellow however when i switched my car off and started it up again, the flat tyre alert icon disappeared. Has this anything to do with the cars power steering? Ive also noticed the car makes a wierd noise since the power steering has been failing, as if the car drones more. noticable when car is idle and while driving. Hope someone can help, thanks more
